Oh, you guys...I just realized that the title of this post is maybe a little misleading. Because you may be thinking I have news about my book, when really, I do not.
But I'm super excited and feel that this little public service announcement does, indeed, require a drum roll.
You guys...I am starting something. And it involves presents!
Here's the thing...while I was away on my little writers retreat, I kept thinking about, and in fact rereading, all the very lovely messages of support and encouragement I've received, some from people I will never have the chance to thank in person. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all those sentiments...the fact that people take time out of their busy lives to tell me they liked something, or to encourage me to keep going, well, it blows the mind. Mine, at least.
And so I wanted to have a way to say thanks. Like, "Here's a big old discount on my book." Only here's the thing...I don't actually have one. A book, that is. So instead, I made a little page on my site called 'Fun Stuff' and figured you could print or pin or tag these little items to your hearts content. And you can, but that's not quite the 'present' I had in mind.
And thinking about this was actually a little deflating...how can I thank my readers for, well, being my readers, if I can't give them something to read???
That's when I remembered that, hello?! While I may not have a book, other people do! There are, in fact, loads of books that I'm absolutely wild about, and as a reader, I feel like it's my duty to pass those titles on to other readers! As a writer, I feel like it's my duty to support other writers! And with this little plan of mine, I can do both.
So here's the plan...every month, I'm going to randomly pick a name from my email subscribers list. And that person is going to get a book. Period.
In case you are wondering, this is absolutely a biased giveaway. I will be selecting and mailing books that I like, by authors I like. Because I'd like to put my money where my mouth is in terms of recommendations, they will all be books that I've read and enjoyed! This isn't any type of book critique or knock against any particular genre...it's just what I like.
What do you have to do? If you're getting this via email, the answer is 'NOTHING'. The random winner will be chosen monthly from the pool of subscribers. And it will be ongoing. So once you're a subscriber, you're in. Though I'm going to nix back-to-back wins so I can better share the love.
If you aren't a subscriber, you're not eligible this month, but it's not to late to join the fun going forward. Just subscribe and sit back and maybe one day, there will be a surprise book in your mailbox! (Actually, that's not true...you'll know you won via email because I don't actually have many mailing addresses).
Also, if you don't like the book or already have it or read it ten times last year, feel free to pass it on to a friend, or a library or a thrift shop...just pass it on! We'll all feel better knowing good books are making their way through the world! (And please understand that I won't be switching books based on request...)
This month, the book I've selected to send out is A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quindlen. It's been a favorite of mine for over a decade and it's short. It was actually a commencement speech given by Quindlen before it was turned into a book. Lovely and beautiful, it's a favorite and I hope that whoever wins it loves it as much as I do!
Thank you guys again for everything...I wish I could send each of you a thank you individually, but please know that I really hope you enjoy this tiny little thing and that a good book ends up in your hands!
Psst...the winner will be getting an email TODAY!!!
